Non-negotiable
At the table
Roleplaying puts strangers in a room and asks them to be vulnerable in front of each other. That only works if everybody is safe.
What we expect
- Everyone at the table is a guest. Harassment, slurs, and hostility based on who somebody is are not tolerated, in the fiction or out of it.
- Consent is ongoing. Content warnings are published for each table. If a scene is heading somewhere a player does not want to go, it stops. No explanation is required and none should be asked for.
- Safety tools are normal, not a failure. Every table runs lines and veils, and any player can call a scene back at any moment. Using one is not disruptive; ignoring one is.
- The game master runs the table, and is also a guest. They can ask a player to leave a table. They are also held to everything on this page.
- Do not turn a table into a spotlight. Four hours divided by five players is not much time each. Watch how much of it you are taking.
- No politics in this community. Game days, the WhatsApp group and the Discord are for playing. Real-world politics, elections and political debate stay out of all of them. Politics inside the fiction is fine: a coup in the kingdom or a guild election is part of the game. This does not reopen the first rule: nobody's identity is ever up for debate.
- Adult content stays on adult tables. Tables marked 18+ are marked for a reason, and the rest are not.
The tools every table uses
These are not exceptional measures. They run at every table, every time, the same way a seatbelt is not an accusation.
- Content warnings
- Each table publishes what it cannot avoid — roughly three things, the core of the story rather than an exhaustive list. They are on the table listing before you book, not sprung on you at the table.
- Lines and veils
- In the first few minutes the table agrees its lines — things that will not appear at all — and its veils — things that can happen but off-screen, described rather than played. Anybody can name one. Nobody has to say why.
- Stopping a scene
- Any player, at any moment, can say stop, or tap the table, or slide the card. The scene rewinds or cuts away and play carries on. It is not a complaint, it is not a scene about you, and no explanation is asked for.
- Session zero, compressed
- A one-shot doesn't get a whole session of setup, so the game master does the short version at the start: what the game is about, what it will not do, and how to stop it.
If something goes wrong
Tell a game master, or tell whoever is running the door. You can also write to diceandtale@gmail.com afterwards, and you can do that anonymously if you would rather.
We will listen to you before we do anything, we will not make you confront anybody, and we will not tell the person who reported something to somebody else. Depending on what happened, the outcome can be a conversation, a table change, or being asked to leave and not come back.
The short version
Come to play. Make room for the people next to you. If somebody says stop, stop.
